Vegas Votes! Community Invited To Vote on Favorite Las Vegas News Bureau Photos


What image pops in your mind when you think of Las Vegas? Is it the neon lights of the Strip or the fast cars racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway? Maybe a scenic view of Red Rock Canyon or the dazzle of Downtown?

The Las Vegas News Bureau invites the public to share in the area’s rich photographic history by voting for their favorite photographs in “Vegas Votes.”

Classic and current images have been separated into ten categories: Scenic Nevada, Entertainment, Sports, Neon Nights, Showgirls, Historic Las Vegas, The Las Vegas Strip, Marquees, Weddings and Fremont Street. Individuals can vote for the best overall image and a favorite photo in each category.

From now until February 4, 2015, voting will be open during regular library hours at the Sahara West Library located at 9600 W. Sahara Ave. The winning photographs will be the featured exhibit in “The Studio” at the Sahara West Library later this year. The selected images will then tour the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District galleries throughout 2015-2016.

For more than 65 years, the Las Vegas News Bureau has captured the sights and sounds of the world’s leading destination like no one else, and has played a unique role in promoting Las Vegas by documenting unforgettable images on film. The News Bureau was created in 1947 as part of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce’s marketing efforts to promote Las Vegas as a tourism destination. It was not long before the Bureau’s photographers were shooting entertainers backstage, on stage, or staging photos with Harpo Marx, Mickey Rooney, or Frank Sinatra. These images were transmitted around the world, and helped drive the publicity machine for Las Vegas.

The News Bureau evolved into a true resource for journalists, generating news releases and assisting with press trips, as well as providing photography. Over the years, the News Bureau has amassed one of the most comprehensive photographic and video collections showcasing the history of Las Vegas. Today, the Las Vegas News Bureau plays an important role in supporting the marketing efforts of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. While our primary function is to work with the news media, we share our collection with the public through community exhibitions.

The award-winning Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is a $60 million independent taxing entity that serves 1.5 million people over 8,000 square miles. Through its 25 branch libraries, the District reaches the urban and suburban communities of the Las Vegas Valley, as well as small and medium-sized towns throughout Clark County and remote rural areas. The branches offer more 2.3 million books, audio, video and digital resources, as well as free programs including author visits, music and dance, children’s activities, computer classes and workshops. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) is charged with marketing Southern Nevada as a tourism and convention destination worldwide, and also with operating the Las Vegas Convention Center and Cashman Center. With more than 150,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas alone and nearly 11 million square feet of meeting and exhibit space citywide, the LVCVA’s mission centers on attracting ever increasing numbers of leisure and business visitors to the area.
