Windmill Library to Open with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Saturday, May 7, 2011, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the Windmill Library, 7060 W. Windmill Lane. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and will include brief remarks by Executive Director Jeanne Goodrich, Library District Board of Trustees Vice Chair Kelly Benavidez and Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager. Light refreshments will be served.

The branch and an adjacent service center housing administrative and support functions are built on a 15-acre site located on West Windmill Lane at the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard in the Valley’s southwest.

Jeanne Goodrich, Library District Executive Director, comments, “We are extremely pleased to bring badly-needed library services to a part of the Valley that has seen tremendous growth. This beautiful building will offer storytimes and programs for children and families, free WiFi and access to computers, homework support to help students succeed in school, and thousands of books and other materials, both physical and online, to satisfy every interest.”

The library will be an energy efficient and modern facility. The architects are seekingLEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification, meaning a building has been constructed to reduce negative environmental impacts and improve occupant health and well-being. The building will efficiently use day lighting to minimize the need for overhead or other lights, and will use regional building materials and water efficient irrigation systems.

The design includes a solar photovoltaic system that will provide up to 8% of building energy demand. At the opening ceremony, a representative of NV Energy will present the Library District with a check for $452,500, a rebate for participation in their Solar Generations program. The funds will help to offset the cost of the Library’s 90.5 kW system, estimated to save the District $21,000 a year on energy costs.

The library will be open seven days a week, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will have approximately 130,000 items in its collection and offer state-of-the art technology including wireless Internet access, a 22-seat computer lab for adults, a computer area for young people  and laptops to borrow to use on site. The library will have meeting space, a Young People’s Library, an art gallery, a 300-seat auditorium, a vending area and used bookstore.

The library will occupy 28,879 square feet, with 7,354 square feet designed for future expansion. An 88,257-square-foot service center will house District administrative offices, support functions, and a centralized materials processing center. The processing center will facilitate the efficient movement of items between branches to fill as many as 140,000 requests per month and get them into the hands of patrons sooner.     

The project was funded through the sale of 10-year, Medium Term Bonds that will be retired in 2018.
