Library District Participates in Worldwide Big Library Read eBook Event

We invite the public to take part in the Big Library Read, a pilot program in which libraries worldwide offer a single eBook to their cardholders. The program is designed to unite library patrons from all around the world. From May 15 to June 1, anyone with a valid District library card can borrow the eBook The Four Corners of the Sky by New York Times bestselling author Michael Malone for free from the Library’s website and read it on all major devices, including Kindle^® and iPad^®.

Over 7,500 libraries in 10 countries from five continents are participating. Readers are invited to join the book discussion on Twitter using #BigLibraryRead.

Club Read: Summer Fun for Kids and Teens

Registration for Club Read, our free program designed for kids and teens to read, earn prizes and have fun, begins Saturday, June 1 and continues through Saturday, August 3. Stop by any library branch to pick up a reading log or register online.

Children from birth to 11 years of age have one log, and teens in grades six and up have a different log just for them. Kids and teens can earn prizes by keeping track of their reading. Every child who signs up for Club Read will get a membership card and a special wallet to put it in!

All participants earn a Book Buck for every five books that are read aloud to them or they read on their own. They can exchange the Book Buck at any Library District Foundation Used Bookstore for a book of their choice. After they read 20 books, they’ll earn a special prize!

Entertaining programs throughout the District will help toddlers, children and teens enjoy the summer, such as a theatrical adaptation of The Secret Garden, a Fratello Marionettes performance of Aladdin, Tony Daniels magic show, storyteller Jim Cogan, storytimes, music, yoga and more.

5th Annual Over the Rainbow Art Competition

In celebration of GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender) Month and the many contributions and achievements of the GLBT community, we will hold our 5^th Annual Over the Rainbow Art Competition in June. This juried art competition exhibit encourages teen and adult artists to participate in showcasing creativity in the visual arts.

Entries will be accepted beginning Wednesday, June 12 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Sahara West Library. Ribbons and cash awards will be awarded to the winners for Best of Show for Adult, Best of Show for Teen, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Awards during the reception on Tuesday, June 18 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Sahara West Library.

Featured art work from the competition will be on exhibit beginning Tuesday, June 18 through August 23 at the Sahara West Library.

Big Library Read

The new Big Library Read initiative is a joint effort between Sourcebooks, OverDrive and public libraries worldwide. It’s a unique program (May 15-June 1) designed to unite the world in reading the same eBook title at the same time and to demonstrate the influence library patrons (you) can have. We already know the power of libraries – this is a unique way to let the rest of the world know!

Excitement is building….since last week, over 2,000 libraries have opted-in to participate in this event from 8 different countries – on 4 continents! Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, North Las Vegas Library and Boulder City Library are three of those libraries!

The eBook for this pilot is Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Malone, every member of the community (with a valid library card) can read the eBook at the same time at no cost to the library! The eBook will be available in the eMedia Catalog shortly. Watch our eRead Me Vegas blog for the announcement of availability.

If you don’t want to read the eBook version you can still participate with the print version! There are limited copies of The Four Corners of the Sky available which you are welcome to begin reading now.

New Member Appointed to Library District Board of Trustees

Marilyn Francis Drake was recently appointed to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Board of Trustees by the City of Las Vegas.

Ms. Drake is a librarian at the Meadows School. Her term will run through April 2017.

Small Business Expo 2013

We will be hosting our first Small Business Expo on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sahara West Library! Join guest speakers: Robin Jay, a Las Vegas-based motivational speaker and a business relationship expert, who has been featured internationally on BBC, MSNBC-TV, Newsweek, CNN, The New York Times and more; San Francisco-based entrepreneur, author and blogger Ben Casnoscha, who was named “one of America’s best young entrepreneurs” by BusinessWeek; and John Assaraf, who has appeared on Larry King Live, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and is an author of two bestselling books, Having It All and The Answer. Local author and leadership coach Christine Ferguson will moderate.

This event is designed to give attendees access to vendors with information and expertise to take their business to the next step. Gain valuable insight by networking with business experts, explore topics of marketing, funding and licensing. Panel discussions will provide information about starting and funding a small business, followed by a questions and answer session.

We have teamed up with Bodies…The Exhibition and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition to present “Love your Library? Tell a Friend!” Just sign up for a free library card during the month of April, or if you already have a library card, like us on Facebook, and be automatically entered to earn a chance to win a gift basket of official merchandise from both Bodies and Titanic exhibitions.

Existing library cardholders will receive an exclusive admission price of $16 for adults, seniors and children to each exhibit starting April 1 through May 31, 2013 (cannot be combined with other offers or discounts). Simply show your Las Vegas-Clark County Library card at the Box Office at the Luxor Las Vegas to receive the discount.

Bodies…The Exhibition showcases human specimens that have been preserved to allow visitors to see first-hand the intricacies of the human form. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition features authentic artifacts and full-scale recreation of the most famous ship in history allowing visitors to become enraptured in the story of the RMS Titanic.

A library card allows free access to a collection of more than several million items of books, magazines, downloadables, CDs and DVDs, as well as online access to an array of information. Teens and children have access to online homework help offering a wealth of free resources designed to assist kids with their daily school assignments.
