Wish You Were Here: The Las Vegas Writes Project

Join us for an exciting Vegas Valley Book Festival pre-event, Wish You Were Here: The Las Vegas Writes Project, on Thursday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at the Clark County Library. Eight of the city’s best writers, Quentin Bufogle, Maile Chapman, Maxwell Drake, Lindsey Leavitt, Corey Levitan, Greg Blake Miller, Kristen Peterson, Lissa Townsend Rodgers, and editor, Scott Dickensheets, talk about their work and experience creating this year’s anthology, which was inspired by iconic Sin City postcards. An Evening with Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, basis of the hit HBO television series True Blood, will be the opening keynote of the Vegas Valley Book Festival on Thursday, November 1 at 7 p.m. at the Clark County Library. New York Times bestselling author Harris created the urban fantasy series about a telepathic waitress named Sookie Stackhouse. Each book follows Sookie through her adventures involving vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures. Other works include the Aurora Teagarden mysteries, the Lily Bard “Shakespeare” series and the Harper Connelly mysteries. (more…)

Uncensored Voices: Celebrating Literary Freedom

Join us for “Uncensored Voices: Celebrating Literary Freedom” on Saturday, October 6, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Clark County Library. This third annual installment of “Uncensored Voices” features dramatic readings and an interactive discussion with experts on literary censorship in the United States, on the Internet and around the world, all in recognition of National Banned Books Week. Moderated by Las Vegas Review-Journal Political Columnist Steve Sebelius, the event features Eva Galperin, International Freedom of Expression Coordinator at the Electronic Frontier Foundation; Professor Jeanne Price, director of the Wiener-Rogers Law Library at the William S. Boyd School of Law; Auggie Romero, ACLU of Arizona Board Member and activist; and self-described book smuggler Tony Diaz, leader of Librotraficante, the underground library movement. (more…)

An Evening with Cheryl Strayed

Join us for a pre-festival event of the Vegas Valley Book Festival, as Cheryl Strayed, the New York Times bestselling author of Wild, Tiny Beautiful Things and Torch, discusses her works in an uncensored conversation with author Maile Chapman on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at the Clark County Library.

Oprah Winfrey selected Wild as the first book for her Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, and the memoir has been optioned for film by Reese Witherspoon’s production company. Strayed has published award-winning stories and essays in the New York Times Magazine, Allure and Elle to name a few. (more…)

FLASH! The Short, Short Fiction Contest

Local writers residing in Clark County are invited to participate in FLASH! The Short, Short Fiction Contest, an annual pre-festival event of the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100 will be awarded. Writers can register online beginning Tuesday, July 10 through Friday, August 17. The project is limited to the first 20 writers who apply for the contest. There is no fee to participate. (more…)

Book Group Mixer at Centennial Hills Library

Join us for a Book Group Mixer, a pre-festival event of the Vegas Valley Book Festival, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at the Centennial Hills Library.   

Detective Chris Baughman, author of Off the Street, will be appearing for discussion of his book and book signing. A work of nonfiction, it details the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Pandering Investigation Team creation, their first high-level bust and how they became known throughout Las Vegas and the country as an unstoppable force in pandering cases.
