Spring Valley Library Hosts Travel Fair
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and Prestige Travel have teamed up to host a Sweetheart Travel Fair on Wednesday, February 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Boulevard.
Tour the branch to learn about popular destinations through the various resources your library has to offer. Get tips from travel representatives during their presentations and at their travel stations on destinations such as Hawaii, Disneyland and Disney World, and cruising the Caribbean, South Pacific, Panama Canal and more.
Enjoy live dance performances by the Ethnic Express International Folk Dancing Club of Las Vegas at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., and the Scottish Country Dance at 5:15 p.m. There will be drawings for prizes and refreshments.

YAllapalooza: A Festival Celebrating Young Adult Literature
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and Barnes & Noble have teamed up to present YAllapalooza, a day-long festival celebrating teen literature on Saturday, February 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Centennial Hills Library, 6711 N. Buffalo Drive in Las Vegas.
Young adults will have the chance to meet attending authors Nancy Holder, Suzanne Young, Martha Brockenbrough, Lisa Schroeder, Kevin Emerson, Lindsey Leavitt, Cat Patrick, Sean Beaudoin, Tera Lynn Childs, Dan Haring and more. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Panel discussions are scheduled including a Buffy discussion, with New York Times bestselling author Nancy Holder who has written a number of popular books in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Dan Haring, who has worked on the films Tangled and Hotel Transylvania, will present an animation workshop.
Join a teen writing group, participate in craft programs or come dressed as your favorite book character for a fashion show.

Libraries Closed for Presidents Day
All Las Vegas-Clark County Library District branches will be closed on Monday, February 18, for Presidents Day. They will reopen at their usual times on Tuesday, February 19.
Library District Gallery Exhibits – Fall Update
Art galleries are located in the Library District’s urban branches and the Laughlin Library and offer a variety of exhibits throughout the year expressing the diversity of local, regional and national artists. Exhibits range from ceramic sculpture to black and white photography; from the fine art of quilts to original art from published children’s books.
Admission to the art galleries is free of change. Galleries in the urban branches are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The art gallery at the Laughlin Library is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation Receives Donation

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, former Trustee and current LVCCLD Foundation President Tim Wong accepted a check from Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club President Tamar Hoapili. Books were also donated by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Bill Wright, a member of the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club. These donations will help to augment the Library District’s Pacific Islands collection and will be placed at the Spring Valley Library.
Library District Board Holds Elections
At the June 9, 2011, Board of Trustees’ Meeting, regularly scheduled elections for Board officers were held. Kelly Benavidez was elected to the position of Chair. Ron Kirsh was elected Vice Chair, Keiba Crear was elected Secretary and Michael Saunders was elected Treasurer. All terms are for the period beginning July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012.
The other Board members are M. Frances Barron, Shannon Bilbray-Axelrod, Verlia Davis-Hoggard, Randy Ence, Carol Reese and Ydoleena Yturralde.

Hear What’s in the Heart – A Shoemaker’s Tale Comes to West Las Vegas Library Theatre
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will host Hear What’s In The Heart – A Shoemaker’s Tale at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 West Lake Mead Boulevard on Friday, July 8 at 2 p.m. for an open invitation dress rehearsal, with performances beginning on Saturday, July 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 10 at 3 p.m.
Libraries Closed for July 4
All Las Vegas-Clark County Library District branches will be closed Monday, July 4, for Independence Day. They will reopen at their usual times on Tuesday, July 5.
Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Summer Reading Program — Join the Fun!
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Summer Reading Program continues through Saturday, August 6. The free Summer Reading Program offers childre
n, teens and their families the opportunity to share reading time together and attend special guest programs while keeping track of their reading successes. Summer reading helps children keep their brains active and enter school in the fall ready to learn and succeed.
Children from birth to age 5 can join the Rubber Ducky Reading Club. Choose from among 12 activities that help develop early literacy skills and earn prizes. Kids in kindergarten through grade 5 can join One World, Many Stories. They choose their reading goal and when they reach a milestone they will earn a Book Buck to exchange for one item at one of the Library District Foundation’s Used Bookstores. When they reach their goal, they’ll earn a certificate, a pass to the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum (LDCM) and an entry into a prize drawing to win a birthday party at LDCM. You are Here is the program for teens in grades six and up. Teens who reach a milestone earn a Book Buck, and when they reach their goal, they will earn a book and an entry into a drawing for a Target gift card.

New Member Joins Board of Trustees
Ms. Shannon Bilbray-Axelrod was appointed to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Board of Trustees by the Clark County Commission to serve the remainder of the term of Trustee Liz Carrasco.
Her term will run through March 1, 2013.
